September updates from the King County Play Equity Coalition!

For the third time, the Coalition partnered with local pro-sports teams to host the annual Sports Sampling Camp. This year’s camp was held at Skyway Park and had about 55-60 campers come each day. In addition to the pro-sports teams' participation, five Coalition program partners provided activities, including Upower, Seattle Tennis & Education Foundation, the Storm Dance Troupe, First Tee, and George Pocock Rowing Foundation.

This past Tuesday, the Youth Action Team (YAT) gave their final presentation on “How can predominantly white sports be more inclusive of and welcoming to youth of color?” The presentation showcased a youth-led participatory action research project (YPAR) they conducted and recommendations they created - work that spanned two years.

Washington state students in grades K-5 will be guaranteed at least 30 minutes of recess beginning in the 2024-2025 school year, thanks to a new law signed today by the Governor.
