Action Team Updates - Q1 2025
ADVOCACY
The Advocacy Action Team is pursuing three legislative items at the Washington state level this year:
Increasing access to schoolyards for physical activity;
Improving safety, quality and equity of youth sports; and
Returning promised state dollars to community playfield projects.

YOUTH
The Youth Action Team (YAT) has been hard at work shaping a youth-led project focused on sports and outdoor equity. Recent meetings have centered on identity reflection, peer interviews, and brainstorming barriers that impact youth access to safe recreation spaces.
Through deep discussions and project planning, the team identified key challenges and began developing a project that will contribute to the King County Play Equity Coalition’s 2025-2030 goals. As they move forward, YAT members are setting tasks and assigning roles.
SHARED LEARNING
The 2025 cohort will bring together organizations interested in increasing girls and women of color participation and leadership in their programs. They will engage in an assessment journey, using an updated Racial Equity Toolkit & Gender Equity toolkit to create and carry out an action plan that will help them achieve that. Trainings will also be available to members to support their inclusion goals.
OUTDOOR RECREATION
In response to member feedback, the Outdoor Recreation Action Team (ORAT) is making exciting shifts for 2025, to better support our community connection with the outdoors. Instead of monthly meetings, we’ll now meet quarterly—giving members more time to engage in hands-on initiatives while still staying connected and informed.
We’re also expanding efforts to offer more free outdoor leadership trainings to help members build skills and confidence in outdoor spaces and become outdoor advocates in their own communities.
These changes reflect our commitment to increasing access, resources, and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Stay tuned for updates on upcoming trainings, donation opportunities, and our first quarterly meeting of the year!
SWIM EQUITY
The Swim Equity Action Team kicked off its first meeting on January 27th, bringing together partners committed to increasing water safety access for communities of color. Discussions centered on collective action, addressing transportation barriers, and implementing initiatives like "Every Second Grader Learns to Swim." Looking ahead, the team will map community connections, refine program strategies, and prepare for an in-person meeting in March to advance swim equity efforts in King County.
