King County Play Equity Coalition is a network of organizations dedicated to challenging and changing systems to shift power and center physical activity as a key part of health and youth development.
We are so excited to announce the re-convening of the Facilities and Access Action Team!
Our first meeting will be in person at the Tukwila Community Center from 1pm-2:30pm on November 14th at the Tukwila Community Center.
We will kick off the meeting by reviewing some of the incredible work that the previous facilities action team was working on, and connecting with each other. We will also spend time looking at project possibilities and focus areas for our work moving forward. At the end of the meeting we will reserve about 15 minutes to discuss issues and work specific to King County.
As with all Coalition action teams, the goal will be to work together to push for greater access and systems change- in this case when it comes to equitable facility access in King County!
State of Play Tacoma-Pierce County was released Oct. 25, 2023, as the Aspen Institute’s latest community report. The report, in partnership with the Names Family Foundation, assesses the state of youth sports and physical activity in Pierce County, Washington.
Congrats to the partners in Pierce County who made this happen – we look forward to working together on statewide efforts!
The Advocacy Action Team is getting ready to tackle a new topic. Come be a part of the group and help us decide what policies and funding the sector most needs to advance play equity!
STIPENDS AVAILABLE. Meetings every other Wednesday, 8:45-9:45am (virtual); next meeting October 4; contact juliem4@uw.edu to join!
ALL WELCOME.
The facilities Action Team is coming back!
We have four or five potential areas of focus and will spend our first meeting checking in, and assessing the possibilities for our group. Our first meeting will be in person at the Tukwila Community Center from 1pm-2:30pm on November 14th at the Tukwila Community Center.
Thank you to everyone who joined us last week at the THRIVE Outside convening, where we discussed and worked on issues related to equity in Outdoor Recreation in King County. During the event, participants from public agencies and community-based organizations collaborated on strategies created throughout this year’s Outdoor Recreation Action Team meetings.
The majority of the session was spent work-planning a recruitment strategy to build relationships with and connect youth and families who traditionally do not participate in outdoor recreation.

The YAT had their first meeting in October. We welcomed 16 members (the biggest team we’ve had so far) representing different regions of King County. Next meeting, members will have to learn how to work together to escape a pharaoh (aka they will be doing an escape room!) to build a solid foundation for working together on a big social media campaign to showcase their recommendations.
A few of our YAT members will also be joining the Seattle Mariners to support their softball and baseball equity efforts. Their kick-off meetings will be in November to get to know each other and learn about the landscape of the Mariners’ equity projects.
The Racial Equity Shared Learning Action Team is moving into the final meetings of our cohort!
This past week we held an awesome panel on Racial Equity at the organizational level with speakers Jen Gibbons, Jonathan Campaña, Dr. Sara Lopez from George Pocock Rowing Foundation, and Hana Kawai from Age Up. Through the panel discussion, we discussed pathways and challenges in how organizations work to enact racial equity priorities and values across and throughout organizational levels.
We plan to wrap up our cohort by workshopping what makes coaching and staff positions (both paid and volunteer) sustainable. The Share Learning Cohort will share out the process of our work at the December Quarterly Coalition Meeting – be sure to be there to learn about how to implement this work at your organization!
Don’t forget to join and participate in our SLACK channel. We have channels for COVID-related information, school-based, population-specific, and other channels to interact with.
