We’d like to introduce to you the Second Cohort of our Youth Action Team (YAT)!
The Coaltion’s YAT is made up of youth in the King County area who all want to help make a difference in their community surrounding the topic of play equity. The research that our first cohort completed last year is what this group – the second cohort – is currently building on.
YAT members are working on digging deeper into their research question: How can predominantly white sports, like hockey, lacrosse and rowing, be more inclusive of and welcoming to BIPOC youth in King County?
From there they are working together to help create possible recommendations that address that question.
Tatiwyat Buck
Meet Tatiwyat Buck! She is one of our previous cohort members who came back to continue the work from last year. She’s excited to be a part of the YAT because she wants to take part in helping her community. Outside of school she loves to play soccer and has a passion for art, particularly painting and ceramics.
DHAKACHE WASHINGTON
Welcome Dhakache Washington! He is a new member to our cohort this year. He enjoys staying active through bike riding, going on walks and at home exercises. He also enjoys old school rap and movies. He wanted to get involved with the YAT because, as an athlete, he’d like to have an impact on exercise and figure out ways to get kids more involved.
EDWIN DUONG
Edwin Duong is a new addition to the cohort! He’s excited to take part in the YAT because of the potential to create change in the sports landscape for youth. Two of his favorite sports to participate in are soccer and swimming, and his favorite food is burgers.
GALIA ZALDIVAR
Another member of our previous cohort is Galia Zaldivar! She stays active through playing a lot of volleyball, primarily beach volleyball. She was excited to come back to the YAT because she would get a chance to work with the previous members and get to know our new members. Aside from beach volleyball, Galia enjoys taking photos, hanging out with friends, listening to music, writing and sleeping.
CLARA BURWELL
Our next returning member is Clara Burwell! They wanted to return to the YAT because they love that they can help make a difference, even if it’s in our little corner of the country. To stay active Clara has fun playing volleyball and squash, they even enjoy going on jogs to clear their mind, rain or not.
MELISSA LEE
Melissa Lee is new to us this cohort. She loves playing ultimate frisbee as a way to stay active. She’s thrilled to be a part of the YAT this year because she gets to meet new people and is given the opportunity to learn and grow as a leader. Not only does she love ultimate frisbee, she also really loves cats and she can play the viola.
SOPHIA SEKITS
Our last returning member is Sophia Sektis. She wanted to come back because sports and equity, in general, are both very important to her and she’s grateful for the opportunity to make an impact on both of those values. She has a passion for creating art and loves to play sports, like soccer and basketball, as well as going on hikes with her family.
REN SAN PEDRO
Welcome Ren San Pedro! She’s excited to join the YAT because it will help her step out of her comfort zone. To stay active she enjoys hiking at Wasko every few weeks and going on runs.
TRIANNA LUU
Meet Trianna Luu! They’re excited to be a part of the YAT this year to meet people and learn about leadership. In their spare time they enjoy going on walks and creating visual art!
GENE WOODARD III
Another newcomer is Gene Woodard III! He’s very excited to be joining us this year and helping continue the work that was started last cohort. Gene stays very active through playing basketball, football and soccer.
Floyd Hennings
Floyd Hennings is a newcomer to our YAT. He is excited to join this cohort and to be involved with the ways that this group can help better the community and provide opportunities of play for all people.
Go team!! Excited to follow your work this next year.
